http://www.newsportng.com.ng The Centre for Peace Advocacy and Sustainable Development, (CEPASD) in collaboration with Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, (GPFN) has pledged commitment to sensitize Nigerians, especially Youths on the need to elect right leaders in the 2023 general elections.
The Country’s Director, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, Rev. John Hayab, made this known during a one-day webinar on ‘Youths Voices Against Electoral Violence.’
He said “part of our activities is to go to motor parks and the places where youths can be reached to sensitize them in order to have a peaceful election.
“The foundation alongside other partners will ensure that Youths are properly sensitized and encouraged to choose the right leader during the general election for sustainable peace and development.”
The keynote speaker, Sheikh Haliru Maraya, while speaking on the subject matter, ‘Youth Voices Against Electoral Violence,’ disclosed that “electoral violence has been the greatest obstacle to democratic rule in our country and sub-sahara countries.
He added that “while electoral violence is caused by illiteracy, ethnicity, impunity, unemployment, among others, we can eradicate this by education, employment, fight against impunity, establishment of court for electoral offences to curtail it’s menace.”
Another speaker, Mr. Moses Abolade, said: Youths should know that their vote is their power and right. Therefore, before election, youth should get involved through observation, working with INEC, have a sound judgement in selecting leaders, and be objective in their decisions and innovativeness.
Mrs. Christie George, also advocated that institutions such as religion, media, schools, NGOs, and Civil Society Organizations, need come together to educate and disseminate information to the Nigeria populace, adding that the curriculum system should be developed.”
She added that Youths are not properly informed. This is as a result of wrong assumption, poor information dissemination, influence of government over information agencies, among others.”
