http://www.newsportng.com.ng Afropolitan Media Limited, in conjunction with the Federal Inland Revenue Service, (FIRS) has organized a one day Workshop for Kaduna Journalists on Nigerian Tax Administration.
The program, “The role of FIRS in driving nations tax administration for nation building, had many Journalists in attendance in Kaduna, on Tuesday.
In her remarks, the Chief Executive Officer, Afropolitan Media Limited, Hajiya Aisha Umar Haliru, said the workshop is mainly to engage Journalists so they can be up-to-date in their reportage especially in tax related stories.
She said, “The workshop aims to bring participants up to date on current challenges faced by tax authorities like the FIRS and the importance of the media reporting these challenges ethically and responsibly in close collaboration with the FIRS and other tax bodies at the sub-national levels & for the education of the taxpaying public.”
Aisha further stressed that the event will help to broaden the knowledge of Journalists on tax matters, even as the society depends on them for information.
Speaking at the event, the program Resource Person, Malam Moroof Ajibola during presentation said tax is not a civil rights but legal because it’s backed by law.
While discouraging factors that may lead to double or multiple taxation, Ajibola disclosed that some charges are illegal especially in the banking sector, hence the need for people to know so they can exercise their right accordingly against such criminality.
He further noted that there are chargeable and non-chargeable items, adding that some items that are religious, including basic agric among other items are exempted, while some gets tax incentives so they can be encouraged to grow.
He added that tax in Nigeria is not as complex as it is in developed countries of the world such as the united state of America, meanwhile FIRS has other agencies they collaborate with to generate more income for Nigeria and Nigerians.
