16-Days of Activism: Labour women joins other advocates, demand solution to violence against women
http://www.newsportng.com.ng Nigeria Labour Congress Women Committee, (NLCWC) Kaduna State Council, has advocated that adequate measures be put in place to curb the menace of sexual and gender based violence against women and girls in Kaduna state.
The women committee made the call in Kaduna on Friday, while commemorating the 2023 16-days of activism on gender based violence and harassment against the female counterparts, said women are needed in the society and therefore must be allowed to live and grow for the good of the common society.
The Chairperson, NLC Women Committee, Kaduna state Council, Comrade Martha Banki in a statement during the program in Kaduna on Friday, said that continuing the struggle will help proffer lasting solution to the issues of SGBV, while lamenting that the rate of rape, child battering, domestic violence is on the high side in recent times.
“The rate of rape, child battering, domestic violence is on the high side. We cannot rule out poverty playing a vital role in this menace in our society runs through with poor enlightenment on the need to see the value of women in the society.
“The workplace lacks credence in sexual harassment as received by homes or when in search for means of livelihood. More action is needed to end violence and psychosocial health, violence women’s equality and access to decent work.” She said.
In his remarks, the the State Chairperson, Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) Kaduna State, Comrade Ayuba Suleiman said until the society act together, ending violence against women will be very difficult.
Ayuba reiterated that the campaign shows how NLC care so much about ending violence against women and girls all over the globe particularly in workplaces, immigrations and in all employments and jobs in solidarity with international labour standards to provide a common framework to prevent, remedy, eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work, including gender based violence and harassments.
“In Nigeria, Labour Act section 54 maternity protection, 55 night work, are some instances. We in NLC Kaduna state council invest in the prevention of violence and harassments against women child by taking bold step to end this menace for the sanity of our dear society.
“We are joining the world activist in ensuring women and girls are free from violence and harassments in all its ramifications. Convention No. 190 and recommendation No. 206 are the first international labour standards to provide a common framework to prevent, remedy, eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work, including gender based violence and harassments.” He said.
In thesame vein, the guest speaker at the event, Aishatu Gusau, spoke on the need to uphold the sanctity of every woman as critical stakeholders in every society for nation building.
Gusau who outlined some of the challenges associated with violence against women, said end to SGBV will improve the health of the nation, enable educational attainment, and empower the next generation to bring about sustainable growth and development, among other benefits.
She remarked also that both men and women contributes immensely to the betterment of the home and society in the absence of violence, meanwhile women perform better and as such should be respected, appreciated for better results.
