http://www.newsportng.com.ng The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has praised President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for demonstrating accountability in the dismissal of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia states.

In a statement signed by its President General, Yerima Shettima, the AYCF described the decision as a significant step toward restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system and reinforcing ethical standards among election officials.

The forum also commended President Tinubu for seeking Senate approval to terminate the appointments of the affected RECs, noting that this aligns with constitutional provisions and reinforces the government’s commitment to electoral integrity.

Additionally, AYCF acknowledged INEC’s dedication to ensuring credible elections, referencing the recent conviction of Professor Ignatius Uduk in Akwa Ibom State for electoral fraud during the 2019 elections as a crucial victory in the fight against malpractice.

Shettima emphasized that the prosecution of electoral offenders sets a vital precedent and serves as a deterrent to those who attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democratic process. He stated that accountability measures such as these would help rebuild public trust and ensure the credibility of future elections.

The group further urged other stakeholders, including security agencies, political parties, and the Directorate of State Security (DSS), to enforce internal disciplinary measures against individuals involved in electoral misconduct.

“This call for accountability extends beyond electoral officials. All stakeholders must uphold ethical standards to foster free, fair, and credible elections. By working collectively, we can strengthen democracy in Nigeria,” the statement read.

The AYCF also acknowledged the complexities involved in disciplinary actions within INEC and expressed appreciation for the adherence to due process in the dismissal of the suspended RECs. The forum noted that following proper procedures is essential for maintaining the credibility of the electoral system.

Shettima reaffirmed AYCF’s solidarity with INEC and President Tinubu in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process. He called on Nigerians to support initiatives that uphold democratic values and ensure an inclusive electoral system that serves all citizens.
