Northern youth distances self from “Take it back“ protest, urges calm among youths

http://www.newsportng.com.ng The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has dissociated itself from the planned nationwide protest dubbed “Take It Back”, urging Nigerian youth—particularly those in the North—to exercise restraint and embrace peaceful channels of engagement amid growing national tensions.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its President, Isah Abubakar, the Council expressed deep concern over the fragile state of the country, especially Northern Nigeria, warning that any civil unrest could further escalate the nation’s already volatile situation.
“We are deeply concerned about the escalating tensions across various regions and the current socio-political climate,” the statement read. “While we understand the frustrations and aspirations of young Nigerians, we must choose dialogue and patience over actions that could further destabilize the peace we all crave.”
NYCN acknowledged the legitimacy of the grievances that have fuelled calls for protest but stressed the importance of preserving national stability through non-violent and constructive means.
“We urge our fellow young Nigerians to come together in solidarity—not through protests, but through peaceful engagements that promote sustainable change,” the Council said.
Citing the tragic aftermath of recent nationwide protests, including the End Bad Governance demonstrations which were hijacked by hoodlums, the NYCN warned against a repeat of events that led to loss of lives and destruction of property worth millions of naira.
“No one desires a repeat of such tragic events,” the group emphasized.
Reaffirming its commitment to working with government agencies and relevant stakeholders, the Council said it remains focused on ensuring that the voices of Nigerian youth are heard through appropriate and peaceful avenues.
“It is crucial that we unite as one force to advocate for our rights and work together to build a stronger, more inclusive Nigeria,” the statement added.
The Council concluded by appealing to the youth to remain calm, avoid violence, and continue to engage in lawful activities while trusting the government to address pressing national concerns.
