Years later, as a young architect, I had the privilege of meeting the man behind the words. I was tasked with designing the interior of his official residence as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Walking into his home, I was struck by an extraordinary sight: “Ghana Must Go” bags overflowing with books, and he told me, “I do have a lot of books!” Curious, I scanned the titles, expecting to find a pattern reflecting his banking expertise or Islamic scholarship. Instead, I was astonished by the diversity; Islamic jurisprudence sat alongside Christian theology, economics rubbed shoulders with philosophy, and finance coexisted with literature. This diverse collection was a reflection of his boundless curiosity, a mind that roamed freely across the vast landscape of human knowledge. As a book lover myself, I went ahead to design a space that would contain the priceless treasures, and when he was dethroned and had to leave the Kano palace, I watched on the news as the books were carefully packaged to depart with their master. A relationship I perfectly understood.
As the Emir of Kano, crowned in 2014, he has used his position to advocate for education, gender equality, and cultural preservation, all while maintaining his scholarly pursuits. His ability to straddle the worlds of royalty and academia is nothing short of extraordinary. His lectures and writings on Islamic finance, governance, and societal reform reflect a man who sees leadership as an intellectual and moral calling.
